Formed in 1983 by producers Eric van Tijn and Jochem Fluitsma, the group consisted of Jetty Weels, Caroline de Windt, and Mildred Douglas. With their powerful harmonies and undeniable stage presence, Mai Tai quickly became one of Europe’s leading R&B and dance acts.
Their breakthrough came in 1984 with the release of “Body and Soul”, setting the stage for what would be a string of international hits. But it was in 1985 that Mai Tai truly left their mark.
“History”, their biggest hit, stormed the charts across Europe and beyond, reaching the UK Top 10 and securing their place on dance floors worldwide. The song’s smooth groove, captivating melody, and heartfelt lyrics made it an instant classic.
Following their success, Mai Tai continued to release hits like “Female Intuition”, “Turn Your Love Around”, and “Fight Fire with Fire”, cementing their reputation as one of the most exciting acts of the decade. Their music was a blend of funk, soul, and electronic dance, drawing comparisons to international icons like The Pointer Sisters and Kool & The Gang.
Throughout the mid to late 80s, Mai Tai toured extensively, performing on major TV shows, festivals, and clubs across Europe, the UK, and the US. Their signature style—elegant, energetic, and effortlessly cool—made them icons of the era.
Though the music industry has evolved, Mai Tai’s legacy has never faded. Their songs remain a beloved part of 80s nostalgia, still played in clubs, radio stations, and playlists worldwide.
Over the years, Jetty Weels and Carolien de Windt kept the Mai Tai name alive, bringing together talented vocalists to continue performing the group’s greatest hits. Mai Tai has graced retro music festivals, television specials, and exclusive events, proving that their music still has the power to move audiences today.
